Catherine Cawthorne's "Big Bad Wolf Investigates Fairy Tales" is a delightful blend of fiction and non-fiction that will have your little ones questioning everything they thought they knew about their favourite stories.

This story cleverly reframes classic fairy tales through a scientific lens, inviting children to question the fantastical elements they've grown up with. From questioning the existence of magical beans to exploring the physics of a glass slipper, the investigations are both informative and laugh-out-loud funny. The Big Bad Wolf leaves no stone unturned in his quest for truth.

My little ones were quite fascinated by the chapter on the three little pigs. We'd always thought the straw house was the weakest, but the book explained that a straw bale house can actually be quite strong and even withstand a hurricane! It was quite fun discussing the different building materials and how they can affect a structure's strength.

That is one aspect of discussions inspired by the book. It's a treasure trove of fun facts and engaging explanations. We then had lots of fun blowing Malteser chocolate balls as far as possible with a straw! Did you know the grey whale which can blow air faster than a Formula One car?

The book's playful tone and engaging illustrations made the complex scientific concepts easy to understand. Though recommended for children 4 - 8 years old, this book is enjoyable for all who love a good story and an exciting twist.

- If you could be a scientist, what would you investigate?

- Can you think of other fairy tales that could be "fact-checked" using science?

- What was your favourite fairy tale to learn about in this book? Why?

- Do you think it's important to question what we read and hear? Why or why not?

"Big Bad Wolf Investigates Fairy Tales" is a perfect choice for parents who want to introduce their children to the wonders of science in a fun and engaging way. It's a great book for bedtime stories, classroom discussions, or simply a fun way to spend an afternoon together. It will keep your little ones asking questions and exploring the world around them.
